We're often told of the 'white plague' that swept the world where European settlers moved & occupied new countries. The list of extinct species in Europe is super long, add to this those who went extinct/near-extinct cause of settlers. When did the public start caring about conservation?

Looks like there were race tracks in Communist Europe during the Cold War - was professional racing practised in the USSR/Warsaw Pact? Were there Soviet race cars? How about super cars? How did authorities view such a seemingly “bourgeois” thing?
